Abstract

This study analyzes the point of sibling rivalry which happens between twins as children characters. Sibling Rivalry is a competition among sibling to get the parents’ affection. In the children book, The Trouble with Twins by Kathryn Siebel, there are twins named Hanrietta and Arabella Osgood and who involve in sibling rivalry because of the preferential and differential treatment as received from their parents and that is where the trouble began. The aim of this analysis is to find out sibling rivalry appear among twins. The object of this study is a children book titled The Trouble with Twins by Kathryn Siebel. Illustrated by Julia Sarda, 233 pages published by Alfred A. Knopf of Penguin Random House LLC in New York (Ages 8 to 12). This study uses psychological criticism as the writer design especially the theory of personality by Alfred Adler more called as Adlerian Theory. However, this study uses the concept of sibling rivalry according to the psychoanalysis theory. The result of the study shows that sibling rivalry is found between them as twins and siblings. Each child is competing to define who they are as an individual. They showed jealousy and sibling rivalry toward each. In the end, this study finds that the main problem of their rivalry is every child wants to be the center of attention in the family. Keywords: Sibling Rivalry, Psychoanalysis, Children’s Book
