Abstract

This study is aimed to identify and to analyze the concept of grief through Samantha Kingston as the main character in Before I Fall (2010) novel. This study has two research questions. The first question focuses at examining the five stages of grief and second focuses on how the main character overcomes her grief. The study uses a qualitative approach based on the narrative elements. To analyze the data, the psychoanalysis theory of Sigmund Freud and the theory of five stages of grief from Kubler-Ross (1969) was used. The result of this study shows the main character succeed to pass the five stages of grief, based on Kubler-Ross (1969) theory. At the end of the data analysis, it turns out that the main character is able to overcome the grief by dealing with herself. She gets deeper understanding and acceptance of her grieving.
