Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the word class formed and the changes that derivational affixes made in the selected articles in Gender Trouble Journal. Furthermore, this study also to find out the root of word and describe the derivational affixation process. There are two articles chosen in this study entitled “Gender: The Circular Ruins of Contemporary Debate” and “Structuralism’s Critical Exchange”. This study uses Qualitative Descriptive approach as the guidance to do an analysis in derivational affixes. The writer collected and analyzed the data with these steps: finding the words consisting derivational affixes, making a note to the collected data in another piece of paper, listing the data into a table, analyzing the data and describing the data into an essay. The result of the analysis shows that many types of derivational affixes are used in the selected articles. The writer took 40 words that contain derivational affixes as samples and this study shows that an affix can change a word class, meaning, and also change both. In this study, there are 27 affixes that change only the word class, 4 affixes only change the meaning, and 9 affixes change both meaning and the word class. The details are as follows: 5 affixes that kept a noun to noun, 2 affixes derived noun to verb, 7 affixes derived noun to adjective, 8 affixes derived verb to noun, 9 affixes derived adjective to noun, 2 affixes derived verb to adjective and 7 affixes derived adjective to adverb.
