Abstract

This study is aimed at describing intrapsychic trauma, its defense mechanism, the effects of intrapsychic trauma and the way to get through of intrapsychic trauma of main character which is portrayed in LH Anderson’s Wintergirls (2009) novel. This study is analyzed using Object Relations theory by Kavaler-Adler with descriptive qualitative method. From the data analysis, it was found that the main character has intrapsychic trauma which caused by her early traumatic experience of her parents and as a witness of her best friend’s traumatic experience also when she heard the death of her best friend. As the result, she has eating disorder, narcissistic personality type, hallucination, delusion, depressive anxiety even conducted self-harm. Thus, in preventing her anxiety, she uses defense mechanisms such as projective identification, introjective identification and self-sabotage. At last, the main character feels guilt towards her attitudes and she feel to be loved and able to love toward people around her also her struggle to out of her eating disorder, hallucination and delusion able to bring her mind back into reality.
