Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the types of derivational affixes, the semantic categories of derivational affixes, and the dominant affixes used in the J A Jance’s Hand of Evil novel. To support this study, the writer used the theory of Lieber (2009) to analyze the types of derivational affixes and the semantic category of derivational affixes. The writer used Lieber’s theory because it is very suitable, simple, but complete, and easy to understand. The writer used the qualitative methods and descriptive approach to describe the data in the J A Jance’s Hand of Evil novel. From the random sampling of fifty data of the study showed that there are, 47 base words attached by suffixes, 3 words attached by prefixes. There are 25 semantic categories as transpositional affixes, 5 as personal affixes, 2 as privative affixes, 2 as quantitative affixes, 1 as qualitative and 5 as negative affixes. In addition, the most dominant derivational affix is suffix –ly.. Keywords: Linguistics, Morphology, Derivational.
