Abstract

Products using metal materials require high hardness and wear resistance. Steel is a metal alloy with iron (Fe) as a basic element and carbon (C) as its main alloying element. The carbon content in steel ranges from 0.2 – 2.1% wt. Medium carbon steel is a material that has good tenacity and toughness welding capabilities. The purpose of this test is to determine the temperature variations, before and after the heat treatment process with the method of impact testing and hardness testing (Rockwell). The test material used is X brand with heat treatment at temperatures of 800oC, 850oC, and 900oC with 10 minutes quenching oil media. The results obtained from energy impact value of 112,74 (Joule) and impact strength of 1,252 (Joule/mm)2 at 900oC. The highest hardness test was obtained value 23 HRC at 900oC. The lowest value of impact testing and hardness test results occur at 800oC. Sprocket steel using quenching oil media has tenacity in the heat treatment temperature of 900oC, which has not changed from its original shape or broken in the specimen, while 800oC the shape changes to become bent but not significant an not broken.
