Abstract

Poem is words which are arranged to be fascinating sentences in written language. So few people understand it because they don’t understand its theme, but to understand the theme is difficult. To understand the theme of poetry, we need a tool called figure of speech and imagery. So this study is very important because it tells how to understand complicated poetry from its theme. The objective of this study are to find out the instrinsic elements of the poems in selected poems of Robert Frost especially the figure of speech and imagery and to know how those things contribute to the theme. Whose theory used by Di Yanni and the method of the study in descriptive quantitative by collecting, identifying, describing, and explaining the imagery and the figure of speech of the poems. As the conclusion of the study, the writer found the same themes in those two poems; the theme is loneliness. Although two poems have the same theme but kinds of figure of speech and imagery are different. Figure of speech in the first poem are : personification, paradox, overstatement, symbol, auditory imagery. Figure of speech in second poem are : metaphor, metonymy, overstatement, symbol, and visual imagery. The writer found the two poems has the same figure of speech both usage and meaning also, like symbol (night). Whereas, the similarity of both poems are the usage of overstatement as figure of speech eventhough it suggest different meaning. Keyword: Literature,Figure of Speech, Imagery and Theme
