Abstract

This research is aimed at discussing euphemistic words used in the famous plays of William Shakespeare. The data analysed are classified into 5 types such as metaphor, idiom, technical jargon, denial, and circumlocution. A theory from Allan and Burridge was chosen to analyse the types of the euphemistic words. The finding shows that there are 5 types of euphemistic words in Cleopatra act 1 scene 1, 5 types of euphemistic words in Romeo and Juliet act 1 scene 1, 5 types of euphemistic words in Hamlet act 1 scene 1. While the factors that cause the author use euphemistic words in the plays are influenced by sexual factor. The result of the study regarding of the use of euphemistic words may give benefit to readers, especially for English Department students.
