Abstract

This study aims at analyzing deixis in the novel entitled Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. The theory was used by Levinson (1994) and Jaszczolt (2002). The theories tell about the types and the referents of deixis that are applied in the novel. The data were taken from the dialogues and statements in the novel which consist form of deixis. Qualitative method is used in the data analysis of this study. The data were classified and grouped according to types and referents of deixis. The results show the types and the referents of deixis found in “Thirteen Reasons Why” novel. There are fifty-eight data samples with five types of deixis, they are fifteen data for person deixis, fifteen data for place deixis, eleven data for time deixis, nine data for social deixis, and eight data for discourse deixis.
