Abstract

Pragmatics is one of linguistics studies that was very attractive to learn more about. There are many aspects of pragmatics, one of them is dealing with speech acts. Speech acts consist of many categories, one of them is directive speech act. This study aims at identifying the directive speech act performed in “A Good Day to Die Hard film” with using Yule’s theory ( 1996 ). Likewise, it finds out how often the directive speech act performed in which function and context of directive speech act that are most frequently used in this film. This study used qualitative method in which data collection was done by downloading the film, downloading English subtitle, watching the film, analyzing the dialogues of each main character, reading the script and library research. From all of the utterance, there are eleven functions of directive speech acts which are successfully identified, namely; asking, forbidding, advising, begging, admonishing, commanding, requesting, requiring, suggesting, ordering and demanding. The result of analysis showed that the directive speech act of asking is the most frequently used in the film. The least frequently used directive speech act is ordering directive speech act. Based on the meanings of the directive speech act in main character Jack and John utterances, most of the point of directive speech act is that the speaker ask to the hearer to do something, most of the function of achievement is that the hearer can give the answer or explanation from the speaker question or order, the context of the utterances is mostly showing that the speaker asks the hearer to answer or to do what the speaker wants and the condition of the utterances is that the speaker believes that the hearer can achieve what the speaker wants. And also, the study revealed the importance of directive speech act in keeping the flow of storyline of the film. Keywords: pragmatics, directive speech act, a good day to die hard film
